Internationality
For us, internationality means:
The iDSB is attended by students of more than 30 nationalities. Language diversity and intercultural dialogue are thus an important part of our togetherness and enrich our everyday school life.
Modern language teaching as well as a mature programme for German as a second/foreign language make it easier for our students to move in an intercultural environment and prepare them for a globalised working world.
Internationality in school life
Languages
In addition to the language lessons that our pupils receive from Year 1 onwards, the iDSB offers a wide range of foreign language acquisition opportunities. Be it in English and French study groups, our class trips to Juseret (grade 4), Avignon (grade 9) and Valencia (Spanish course in grades 9 and 10), in free Italian courses, browsing the foreign language sections of our libraries or preparing for language certificates: every school day holds new exciting opportunities to test and expand one’s language skills. This is especially true for the children of our Bilingual Kindergarten and Pre-School, who are cared for in the “language bath” by a German- and an English- or French-speaking pedagogical specialist, depending on the foreign language chosen.
The Network of German Schools Abroad
As one of 140 German schools abroad worldwide, the iDSB is part of a global network. Supported and advised by the Federal Republic of Germany, the network facilitates, among other things, the exchange between schools.
For example, our successful participants in the regional competition Jugend musiziert travel to another German school abroad every spring for the national competition. In recent years, they went to Paris and Stockholm and the iDSB has also hosted the national competition. Impressions from these exciting days can be found HERE.
At the same time, we use the international network for sporting exchange. Regular sports trips, e.g. to Dublin and Moscow, are complemented by the European Games of the German Schools Abroad, which take place every two years and traditionally take place at the iDSB. In autumn 2018, we welcomed almost 100 young athletes from seven schools to the competitions – a great experience for all involved! You can find impressions of the European Games 2018 HERE.
Model United Nations
“Political action through political education”: This is the goal of the Model United Nations, in which a group of iDSB students takes part every year. In this international simulation of a conference of the united nations, the participants represent different countries and thus get to know the daily business of the UN at first hand. Over the course of several days, the students debate and negotiate in English, draft resolutions and table amendments. You can find more detailed insights into the project and the MUN in Hamburg 2018 HERE
