Remembrance Day in Lommel
By Antoinette Moretus Plantin de Bouchout
For the second year in a row, I, along with 11 other music students from Years 11 and 12, have been lucky enough to take part in the Remembrance Day commemoration in Lommel on 17 November.
Lommel is a small town on the Dutch border which is known for having the largest cemetery for German soldiers of the Second World War outside Germany. Around 39,000 people are buried there.
This year, too, I found the experience of walking through the cemetery and listening to the peace speeches of the personalities and ambassadors particularly moving.
You realise the extent of war and the suffering that war causes. Especially in these times, it is important to deal with the concept of peace and this event was very fitting for this.
I am very grateful to have been able to attend the dignified commemoration of the German fallen from 1939 to 1945 at this location and I hope that the German school will also take part in this important project next year.
