The Long Night of Maths – An unforgettable adventure for 30 pupils

On the night of 22 to 23 November 2024, our school hosted the now legendary ‘Long Night of Mathematics’ – an exciting competition that offered students from years 6 to 12 not only mathematical challenges, but also exciting shared experiences. 30 dedicated participants set off to work in teams until the early hours of the morning on tricky maths puzzles and put their skills to the test. But this competition was more than just maths – it was a night of teamwork, fun and shared memories.

    Maths meets community

Under the direction of Sophie Ruffert and Patricia Offerman as well as a trainee, the Long Night of Maths was a special experience. The two organisers ensured that the evening was perfectly prepared: from the mathematical tasks that the students solved in groups to the many activities that made the long evening varied and entertaining. The students not only had the opportunity to put their mathematical knowledge to the test, but also to demonstrate their teamwork and creativity.

This year’s competition was particularly exciting, as the participating groups managed to advance to the second round of the competition – a success that boosted motivation even further and gave the participants even more incentive to keep going.

Between maths, pizza and midnight sports

Of course, the long night had to include a short break to relax. So there was a pizza break in the evening, where everyone could fortify themselves to stay fit for the next challenges. The competition mode was demanding, but there were always moments that relieved the tension and ambition in the group.

A very special highlight was the midnight sport, where the students mobilised their energy reserves once again despite the late hour. A round of sport provided fresh air and new motivation – and not just for the minds, but also for the bodies. It was the perfect counterbalance to the mathematical brainteasers that were completed that evening.

    Closing with dodgeball and breakfast

The ‘Long Night of Maths’ ended with a joint breakfast, where all participants had another opportunity to exchange ideas and reflect on the night.

The long night was a complete success – not only because the students demonstrated their mathematical skills, but also because they were able to grow together in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. This event showed once again that maths is more than just numbers and formulae – it connects people, promotes team spirit and creates unforgettable experiences.

    Conclusion

The Long Night of Maths was a unique experience for all participants. With a successful mix of challenging maths problems, joint activities and a great atmosphere, the night was an unforgettable adventure. We are already looking forward to next year – who knows, maybe one team will even make it to the third round!
