Helping together: Pupils from Year 5 get involved with Serve the City

On Thursday, 7 November, the pupils in Year 5 had a special experience: they were out and about in Brussels city centre to do some good. The campaign began at school – the children enthusiastically prepared sandwiches and packed them in paper bags they had painted themselves. In addition to the lovingly designed snacks, hygiene packs and thermos flasks of hot coffee and tea were prepared. The children then went out into the city in three groups – where they demonstrated not only organisational talent and team spirit, but also courage and empathy: they openly approached people living on the streets and handed them the prepared gifts. Small conversations developed time and again – often in several languages, reflecting the diversity of the children and the city of Brussels. It was particularly impressive to see how naturally the pupils approached their fellow human beings and conveyed a sense of community and appreciation. The campaign was not only a success in terms of helpfulness, but also a valuable experience for the children.

A big thank you to the Serve the City organisation and the dedicated mothers who accompanied and supported us, as well as the accompanying teachers. The next campaign will take place before Christmas together with the year 9 classes and we are already looking forward to it!
